Dubai Fountain

August 11th 2017

The water fountain that rises beautifully under a spectacle of colorful light and dances to the melodies playing around is indeed a piece of art. This Dubai Fountain, the second largest choreographed fountain in the world was built at a cost of AED 800 million (USD $218 million) and is one of the most captivating structures in the city.

Dubai’s most compelling tourist attraction, “The Dubai Fountain” is located in Downtown Dubai. Set on man-made 30-acre Burj Khalifa Lake, it is illuminated by 6,700 lights and 25 colored projectors which beautifully animate it. It was designed by a California-based company.

The fountain’s name was actually chosen by the people. The developer, Emaar Properties organized a contest to choose the name for this water shooting spectra. The result of the contest was announced on October 26th 2008 but the fountain was not started till one year later. On 8th May 2009, the fountain was officially inaugurated along with the opening ceremony of The Dubai Mall.

Dubai fountain uses the most advanced incandescent fountain lights available in the world. Over 6,600 WET Superlights light this water shooting fountain. Apart from that 25 color projectors are used to create an alluring visual spectrum which results in more than 1,000 different water expressions.

The beams of light that light up the fountain,  can be seen from as far as 20 miles away.

The Dubai Fountain shoots water to the astonishing height of 900 ft in various forms and expressions filled with a colorful spectrum. However, this is not the only defining feature of this fountain. The ambiance of the fountain is even more enticing -- its producers have included music to it. The water dances to different melodies echoing in the atmosphere. Mostly classical and contemporary Arabic music is used but other genres can sometimes also be heard along with the sprouting water.

The Dubai Fountain is constructed from many high pressured water shooters and jets. Special water machinery has been incorporated in the fountain, which can shoot water in a way that makes it appear as if it is dancing to the beat and melody.

The fountain consists of shooters, super shooters and extreme shooters, which pump out water at various heights. But the extreme shooters are rarely used – they are only employed on special occasions since getting them to operate is a time-consuming process.

The Dubai fountain is composed of a unique design comprising five circles of different sizes and two large arcs, which can throw water in different patterns and combinations.

When operational, the fountain can shoot up to 22,000 gallons (83,000 liters) of water at any moment. When the shooters eject water, a loud ‘boom’ is heard.

The element of fire:

In 2010, one more feature -- shooting fire was added to the Dubai Fountain. But this element was only temporary and was included for the New Year celebrations. It left every onlooker, tourist and native mesmerized.

The Dubai Fountain continues to attract tourists from around the world.
